So we’re in  between series at The Water’s Edge, and my favorite thing to do in those times is turn to my favorite inspiring thinker: Rob Bell.  So we used his Nooma- Breathe.  All of the Nooma videos rock.  This one is super awesome.  All about how God is… well, about how our every breath… His name you see is spelled… you really need to watch the video.  14 minutes worth of rock your face off.  He’s got several awesome books, too.  I’m a fan, can you tell?

So we started the night with a couple songs: Your Grace is Enough (by Tomlin) and Open Skies (by Crowder).  We watched the Nooma and then I lead us in a relaxation exercise.  Something I learned from a very cool college professor of mine.  People seemed to respond to it well.  From there we broke into small groups to discuss the film and it’s potential application in our lives.  We came back together for a couple more songs: From the Inside Out (Hillsong United) & Yesterday, Today & Forever (Beeching).

It was a very simple night – very focussed on our breathing – and it was cool.
Good crowd, especially for the week after Easter!

Your Stories :: Angie’s Flowers April 16, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — watersedgeringgold @ 6:40 pm

Following our service on Easter, 2009, we invited people to take home a vase of flowers with an Easter card to someone who could use them.  The following email came from Angie, who was in worship with us that night:

In regards to the flower vases that we took with us on Sunday, I will tell you that I gave both of mine away.

One went to my neighbor Rachel and her boyfriend Robert.  He has actually asked me about the church a couple of times, and I have invited them twice.  So, I knew I wanted them to have one.  Their vase contained Lilac, and Rachel intends to root it, so that we can enjoy it in our yards!

The other vase I took, went to the woman who took my order at the Ringgold Krystal when we drove through after church!  It was the funniest thing.  I didn’t initially know who that vase would go to, but when she took my order, I knew immediately that it was hers.

When I drove around to the window, before I had a chance to say a word about it, she said to me, “Oh my goodness, those flowers are so beautiful.  Are they real?” I replied, “Yes they are real, and I have brought them to you!”

She was sooooooo happy that she yelled to everyone working there to look at what she had been given!!! She asked me more about the church, and said that she has a 12 year old son who would probably love to come.  She said that he has crippling arthritis and doesn’t get out much.  She told me that she has worked there at that Krystal for 10 years.

Way to plant some beautiful seeds of God’s love, Angie!!

The Ultimate Scandal – A Risen Christ! April 13, 2009

Easter became the finale of our series about the Scandalous Love of Jesus.  Sure, he loved in all kinds of radical, unpredictable, tick-off-the-important-people kinds of ways, but the most scandalous thing of all… He didn’t stay dead.
He paid the price our sin required, and rose again to tell the story.  The Good News – Jesus is alive and with his life, death and ressurection, he brought heaven to earth!

So we started our celebration of this fact by introducing the ancient call and response of: “Alleluia! Christ is risen!” to be responded to with, “He is risen in deed!”  We went back and forth a few times and through out the night I would yell out my part and they responded in kind.  We used an awesome video to remind us of how amazing Jesus was and is: That’s My King  – you should definitely click this link and watch it if you haven’t seen it before!

That segued us into singing “Here is Our King” by David Crowder and “Happy Day” by Tim Hughes.  This was a “contemporary” Sunday, so John preached a short sermon next.  The text he used was from John 20:1-18  And he spoke mostly about “So What?”  Jesus is raised from the dead = what now?  What will our response be to this phenomenal event?  Will we sit, dumfounded in our confusion and be overwhelmed?  Will we be apathetic and ignore it based on a lack of proof?  Or will we BELIEVE and share the Good News with any and all who will receive it?  What will we do with this risen Christ?

We watched another great video (Alive) to get to our next piece.  It ends with this beautiful flower image and flowers is where we went.  At our morning services, people brought in flowers to add to our “Living Cross” (a big white cross wrapped in chicken wire – it starts off bare and then as flowers are added it comes alive.)  That afternoon we took off the flowers and put them in 50 glass vases.  We put those on the floor in the shape of a cross.  We also made little cards that said, “Happy Easter!  This is our simple way of saying: God loves you!”  On the back there were directions to The Water’s Edge and a short description of what it is.  So we asked people if they were willing to share some of the good news by taking a vase of the flowers and a card to someone who could use a little love.  As they came forward to take a vase and a card we sang “From the Inside Out” by Hillsong United.

I had everyone share with someone near them who they were bringing their vases to and what the plan was.  How they thought the person might react.  And then we wrapped up the night with a couple more songs: “Mighty to Save” by Hillsong United and “Song of Hope” by Robbie Seay Band.  It was a great night!

Alleluia!  Christ is Risen!  He is risen in deed!

Scandalous Love – of the Dirty April 6, 2009

It’s the week before Easter, which means churches all over were reflecting on the last events of Jesus’ life on earth.  We did the same…well, the same in a Water’s Edge way.  Our angle was to think through the events from the perspective of the disciples.  They had been so faithfully (although imperfectly) following Jesus and now things were just getting kind of crazy!  I mean, can you imagine what they must have been thinking and feeling?  Those dirty, tired feet of theirs had traveled a lot of ground to get them to Jerusalem – so we did our best to walk in those shoes for the night.

No band this week – just me and my guitar.  We opened with “Here I am to Worship” and then John got up to share.  He spoke for less than 10 minutes about what had been happening since Jesus and his disciples arrived in Jerusalem.  About the triumphant entry with Palm branches waving; about the upset in the temple and Jesus’ teaching there; about the way the disciples kept insisting they would stand by Jesus’ side even to death.  And then they slowed down and shared in the Passover Meal together.  That’s where the talking stopped and the experience began.

We set up three stations.

One for communion:  on our stage, where the band would normally be, we set up a long low table with cushions on the floor.  On the table lots of pottery and candles – bread and juice.  The scripture posted there for everyone to read was Luke 22:13-20.  They were to recline at the tabel, imagine sitting there with the Son of God, knowing there was something dangerous around the corner, and receive the sign of the new covenant about to be made between God and humanity.

One for the footwashing:on both sides of our room we set up footwashing stations.  2 people on each side knelt before containers of warm soapy water ready to serve.  The scripture to read at this station – John 13:4-17  Many people took us up on the opportunity to humbly receive such a personal and intimate blessing.  Even those who weren’t comfortable enough to receive it were moved by the beauty of it.

And one station for the Garden:  In the back of our room, on both sides, we set up some tables and chairs.  Along the back side of the tables we created a “garden” out of plants we borrowed from a local nursery.  The palms used in the morning services were laid out among them.  On the front side there was a long strip of paper with markers, and candles to light it.  The scripture to read – Matthew 26:36-43  People were invited to picture themselves, scared, worried, and sitting in that garden waiting for Jesus.  What would they’re prayers have been?  We asked them to write those prayers down on the sheet of paper and to imagine how helpless those disciples must have felt.

During the station time, there were several songs with videos going on our screen.  One I bought, called “Are You Amazed?”   The other songs had backgrounds we made:  “Small Enough” by Nichole Nordeman and two by David Crowder Band “Oh God where are you now” and “The glory of it all”.

When the station time was over, we turned our attention back to the scripture.  Using footage from “The Passion of the Christ” as a background, we heard the rest of the story: from Jesus’ arrest in the garden through his burrial in the tomb.  It was a 12 minute piece of video that was very powerful.  Following it I attempted to sing “Why” by Nichole Nordeman.  This is an extraordinarily moving song for me.  I only made it about half way before getting so choaked by emotion that I could barely sing.  Eventually, I finished.  I closed in prayer and we left in the darkness of that tomb.

I’ll add some pictures soon.
